He’s one of the biggest names in UFC but is Jon Jones slowing down at an advanced stage in his illustrious career. A star of multiple title fights, Jones has used the octagon as a canvas in recent years, and the pictures he has painted have been masterpieces laced in toil and brutality. A long-time belt holder, Jones is accustomed to title class as well as anyone in combat sport, but could his reign be in danger when he takes on Dominick Reyes in the main event of UFC 247 at Houston.
Jones’ stay at the top of UFC’s light-heavyweight division has been a dominant one, but like all good runs, it will eventually end. His reign of terror has saw him register a number of impressive victories as the likes of Quinton Jackson, Rashad Evans, and Daniel Cormier have all succumbed to his broad range of offense. Can Reyes be the man to deter the man from New Mexico?
Since making his UFC bow in 2017, Reyes has climbed the rankings steadily with a number of workmanlike performances. The Californian rarely set pulses racing with his victories, but he did make a huge statement back in October when he produced a stunning first round stoppage against the vastly experienced Chris Weidman. Can Reyes pull out the power once more against the formidable Jones?
It’s almost impossible to ever back against Jones and although Reyes has so far demonstrated a way to win during his dozen fights inside the octagon, this is a huge step up and it could be a painful one. Jones has always proved that he’s a step above his contemporaries and that should be evident on Saturday night as he gets the job done inside the distance.
